Temple ended alumni email — and changed the agreement first

The 2022 agreement change

This is the detail that makes Temple different from every other school in this comparison, and it is reported by The Temple News rather than alleged in any complaint.

In 2022, during Temple's migration from Google to Microsoft, the university altered the agreement governing alumni accounts. Alumni who went to update a password were presented with a checkbox whose terms gave up the lifetime access they had previously been promised.

Consent collected at a password prompt, for a right granted years earlier. Whatever one concludes about it legally — and nothing here is a legal opinion — it is a different kind of act from announcing a service change.

The lawsuit

Russell Bryant, an alumnus and practising attorney, sued Temple for breach of contract in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas in December 2024. His account is that Temple's policy at his graduation guaranteed lifetime access to his @temple.edu address.

The Chronicle of Higher Education reported in August 2025 that his attempt to bring the case as a class action was denied on a technicality, and that other alumni backed him. What became of his individual claim has not been reported, so this site does not characterise where it stands.

Temple closed the accounts on its announced schedule regardless.

How this bears on the question

Temple is the second of only two universities here that ended alumni email outright. The 2022 agreement change is the part that rhymes most closely with Duke's situation, where a written promise from 2007 was left standing on the same page that set an explicit expiry for a different account. Duke switches off @alumni.duke.edu on January 31, 2027, and has announced no replacement address service.
