What is happening

Duke is shutting the service off on January 31, 2027 — a date already moved once, from July 31, 2026. Duke has announced no replacement address service.

The stated reason is deliverability: third-party providers increasingly reject forwarded mail, and Duke says it can no longer guarantee delivery. That technical claim is true and this site does not dispute it.

What was promised

Duke's own IT department published in 2007 that this was “a free lifetime forwarding email address to all Duke alumni,” and left that sentence untouched through six revisions of the page across twenty months.

On the same page, across the same period, Duke wrote an explicit expiry twice for the temporary student account it did intend to end. It knew how to write an expiry, and did, for the other account.

Twelve archived captures are published with SHA-256 hashes so the claim can be verified without trusting this site.

One thing Duke's own documentation disputes

Duke's OIT knowledge base article KB0034356 is stale: it still gives the old July 31, 2026 date and describes a OneLink account through which alumni “set up a lifetime email address.”

That is why the claim on this site is about what Duke has announced, which is checkable, rather than about what exists — which Duke's own documentation currently disputes with itself.

How this bears on the question

Duke is the only university in this comparison whose termination is still ahead rather than behind. Twelve of sixteen peers facing the same authentication change kept a working alumni address. That is the number that has to be explained by anyone claiming this could not be done.
