Why the wording matters

This is the same technical reality every other university is describing. Forwarded mail can fail authentication; nobody can promise otherwise.

Dartmouth's response was to say so and keep the service. That is a materially different choice from concluding that because delivery cannot be guaranteed, the address must end — and it demonstrates that the honest disclaimer and the shutdown are separable. A university can tell alumni the truth about deliverability without withdrawing the address.

How this bears on the question

Dartmouth is the counter-example to the strongest version of the termination argument: it faced the same uncertainty and published a disclaimer instead of a deadline. Duke switches off @alumni.duke.edu on January 31, 2027, and has announced no replacement address service.
