Once a graduate has one, mail to the expired @nd.edu address forwards to it automatically. The opt-in step is worth stating precisely: the account is requested, and only the onward forwarding is automatic.

How this bears on the question

Notre Dame is an opt-in variant of the hosted-mailbox answer. Duke switches off @alumni.duke.edu on January 31, 2027, and has announced no replacement address service.
