Stanford gives alumni a free mailbox
Kept the address
Free @alumni.stanford.edu mailbox for anyone enrolled three quarters or more. No membership fee, though Stanford's terms reserve the right to end the service.
What happened
Stanford provides a free @alumni.stanford.edu mailbox to anyone enrolled for three quarters or more. There is no membership fee.
Two precisions this site insists on, because overstating another university's generosity would be the same error as understating it. Eligibility is three or more quarters of enrollment, not everyone who ever attended. And Stanford's terms reserve the right to terminate the service, so “permanent” is not a word Stanford uses and it is not used here.
How this bears on the question
Stanford is a hosted-mailbox example with an eligibility threshold and an explicit reservation of rights — a more guarded version of the same answer. Duke switches off @alumni.duke.edu on January 31, 2027, and has announced no replacement address service.

This page is part of an independent record of university alumni email terminations, maintained by a Duke alum. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Stanford or Duke University. Every row is sourced to the university’s own documentation where one exists, and this record has been corrected in public three times.
If something here is wrong or out of date, tell us — a correction is more useful than being right by default.
