Can I keep my Duke alumni email after 2027?

No. Duke switches off @alumni.duke.edu forwarding on January 31, 2027. There is no replacement mailbox, no paid tier, and no way to opt in and keep it. Duke has asked alumni to update a preferred address elsewhere and move on.

What actually happens on January 31

The address stops forwarding. Mail sent to it after that date does not reach you, and — this is the part that does the damage — the sender is generally not told. A bank, a licensing board, a journal, or a company distributing a class action settlement sends once, to the address it has on file, and never learns it failed. You do not get a bounce, because you are not the sender.

That is different from an inbox filling up or a password expiring. There is no recovery period and no archive to retrieve, because a forwarding address never stored anything in the first place.

Is there any way to pay to keep it?

Not as things stand. Duke has not offered one. Several peer universities fund alumni email through an alumni-association membership or a small annual fee, and that is one of the five options this campaign has asked Duke to consider — it would cover any licensing cost and shrink the service to the people who actually want it. Duke has not said whether cost drove the decision at all.

Did every university do this?

No, and this is the part most alumni do not know. Fifteen peer universities hit the identical technical problem in the same window — forwarded mail began failing authentication after Google and Yahoo started requiring it in February 2024 and Microsoft began rejecting under-authenticated mail in May 2025. Twelve of them kept the address. Princeton, Yale and Penn moved alumni onto real mailboxes; Michigan and Dartmouth repaired the forwarding and kept it; Columbia switched off forwarding to outside domains but left the mailbox in place. Harvard announced the same shutdown Duke is doing, in September 2022, and reversed it six weeks later.

So what should I actually do?

Move the address off anything that matters, starting with the accounts you cannot fix later. A handful of services — a domain registrar with an unverified email, an airline loyalty account you cannot log into — require the old mailbox or a photo ID to recover, which means they have a real deadline rather than a nominal one.

Is the decision final?

It has already moved once. The original cutoff was July 31, 2026; Duke extended it to January 31, 2027 after alumni objected. Harvard reversed an identical decision after about 2,800 alumni signed a petition, and Colorado Boulder reopened its own after being sued. Whether Duke moves again is not something anyone can promise, but “already decided” is not the same as “already happened”.
